Sickness advice?

Hey all!

So I am in a little predicament right now. I was wondering if you guys can give me some advice.

Scarlett has been sick now for 6 days. About a week and a half ago she was really clingy and extra whiny. I thought maybe she was starting to teethe, but then a few days later she developed a mild fever (that eased with paracetamol) and a runny nose. One day after that she developed a really chesty, nasty cough.

So for 5 days now she’s had this terrible cough.

On the second day (four days ago) I got the doctor to come out to check her over.

I wasnt sure at what point I call the doctor to check her out, and I didn’t want to take any chances.

He said her chest was clear, so were her ears and throat. He said it was likely a viral cold and will get better over the next few days.

He recommended Otrivin junior nasal drops to help with the congestion and to clear the mucous.

Two days ago I asked a chemist if there was a cough medicine for babies, and it turns out there is. So she’s had that for two days now.

My problem is, she doesn’t seem to be getting better. In a few hours we will be approaching the 7th day of this ‘cold’ and it hasn’t eased at all, if anything, it has gotten worse.

She has a temperature more often now, so instead of giving panadol once a day before bed (as per the doctors instructions to help her sleep better) we are now (as of today) having to give it to her every 6-8 hours, otherwise her temperature jumps up.

The highest her temperature has gotten is 38.6β€’C and it came down once I gave panadol.

She was sleeping okay at night, but the last two nights she has pretty much been up all night. The problem is, she is so tired but she can’t breathe through her nose and this damn cough wakes her up! Last night I ended up getting up and sitting in a chair with her on my chest (upright) so she could sleep. I sat there 8 hours. I didn’t get a wink of sleep but she slept much better. She still got woken up from the cough though.

My question is, when do I call the doctor again? He said that colds in babies can take up to 10 days to clear. I don’t want to come across as a hypercondriac, but I also don’t want to let her suffer either. I hate seeing her like this.

Her nose is red from all the wiping. Her lips are dry.

She’s not eating or drinking as much as she normally does, but is getting enough fluid to keep her hydrated. I went out and got some hydralyte ice blocks for her to suck on. She loves them and I’m just happy she’s getting some fluid!!

I don’t know what to do? Help!

  1. Poor Charlotte & poor momma! I’m sorry, no advice really. I would just listen to your gut, and don’t feel bad if you think she needs to see the doctor again. Just do it for the peace of mind it may provide.

  2. From what you’re describing it sounds like a normal cold to me. If you’re solely worried about her comfort, I’d give it a few more days. That said, our pediatrician always says that if we’re concerned we should call, no matter what. Good luck, hope she feels better soon!

    1. I think I’m worried about everything. I got pneumonia when I was little and it has left scarring on my lungs. Because of the scarring, I am prone to chest infections. I’m so paranoid about her developing one because I know how hard it is for a baby to fight it and how easy pneumonia develops. It’s also her temperature that concerns me. I have called for a doctor, at least it’s peace of mind even if he tells me it’s still a cold πŸ™‚

      1. Totally fair. Like I said, our pediatrician always tells us to err on the side of caution. Darwin once had a 103.6 degree temp for a few days that we finally decided was teething. It’s scary to see numbers like that!

    1. You’re right and I have. I’m probably just being super paranoid, but I would rather be paranoid and get the OK from the doctor than having a baby that needs to be hospitalised or something. Thanks lovely πŸ™‚

  3. I hope Scarlett feels better! Have you tried to use a humidifier in her room when she sleeps? When Kaimani gets congested it seems to help him sometimes. Also I like to put just a little Vaseline or aquaphor right under his nose when it gets red from wiping. πŸ™‚

  4. Keelan had a cough forever! I even worried myself to death googling whooping cough. It lasted like a month. Doc said lungs chest ears all clear. But it was bad and would wake him up from naps and middle of the night. Eventually he got over it. So that’s my only advice. Know she will eventually get over it and just keep doing everything you can to make her comfortable in the meantime.

    1. Thank you!! None of my other mummy friends have ever had a sickness that lasted this long! I’m relieved I’m not the only one with a child with an ongoing cough. I was starting to think she had something wrong with her immune system. That’s a big relief. It is starting to get better now, but it’s still not gone! We are going on 3 weeks now!
